For industrial roofers, working with little (or no) shade, hot-tar kettles and propane torches means an increased risk of a heat illness.

Heat illnesses, such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke, can be serious, leading to serious impairments and even death.

During this week of extreme weather, I’ve been pleased to see this roofing client take extra measures to protect their workers.

This includes:

  • Making water readily available for workers with refill stations and/or bottled water on site
  • Adapting work to account for heat illnesses, either slowing down or working in intervals with more breaks  – or making the decision to stop working altogether
  • Using their daily hazard review to make workers aware of the symptoms of heat illness and treatment

The reality is that many businesses across Ontario – not just roofers – are working longer hours to overcome delays caused by ongoing supply issues. During this season of warmer weather, heat illness will be a significant challenge no matter what your industry.

Prevention, education and responding quickly to heat illness symptoms are the best ways to keep your crews safe.

Be sure to encourage your staff to know the symptoms and look out for each other in the weeks ahead.
