With the land border re-opening to the U.S. on November 8, businesses can expect to see more employees travelling internationally over the coming months. Many vacation plans were on hold due to COVID, and Ontario is eager to get back to what they’ve missed.

Border-crossing employees will be looking for guidance about how to complete the COVID screening tool in the coming weeks. Avoid any confusion around returning to work by leveraging the language found in the Ministry of Labour (MOL) COVID screening tool.

The MOL COVID screening tool asks: “In the last 14 days, have you travelled outside of Canada and been told to quarantine (per the federal quarantine requirements)?”. Note that the important qualifier included in this sentence determines whether someone has received instruction to quarantine.

Quarantine rules apply to anyone who has tested positive for a PCR test. These rules also apply to anyone crossing the border who doesn’t present a PCR test result completed within 72 hours prior to travel. These are important considerations to keep in mind when supporting your employees return to work. Knowing whether an employee was instructed to quarantine may also help you refine workplace policies to keep your workforce safe.
